The Gimlet is believed to have originated in the mid-19th century as a drink made with gin and lime juice, served on British naval ships. The drink was created to help prevent sailors from getting scurvy, a disease caused by a lack of Vitamin C.
Over time, the Gimlet evolved into a cocktail that combined gin and sweetened lime juice, and became a popular drink by the mid-20th century. Today, it remains a classic cocktail that is enjoyed all over the world, often made with gin (or vodka), and served in a variety of styles, ranging from sweet to sour.
